From Blippi To Big Confidence: Dove Marks 20 Years By Expanding Support To Aussie 4-Year-Olds
Kids are often fondly referred to as full of life and carefree, particularly those under the age of 10. However, new research from Dove, The Real State of Beauty: A Global Report, reveals concerning trends that body confidence issues start early and intensify as children grow older.
The Real State of Beauty: A Global Report, indicates among Australian girls, 56% reported feeling unconfident at school due to dissatisfaction with their appearance, highlighting how school experiences can significantly impact self-esteem.
Setting out to change this, Dove, a longtime champion of self-esteem having introduced The Dove Self-Esteem project 20 years ago, is now expanding its initiative to reach kids as young as four by partnering with popular kids TV program Blippi.
Aimed at breaking down unrealistic beauty standards thanks to evidenced based messaging, Dove’s Blippi partnership is just one way parents at home can foster supportive environments for kids.
To support parents in taking a holistic approach to body positivity at home, below are some additional ways parents and role models can support young kids to develop healthy and happy relationships with body talk and body positivity.
Be a Role Model for Positive Self-Talk
Leading by example is one of the most effective, and powerful ways children learn. By setting yourself the standard to be kind to yourself, kids will learn to mirror this in how they speak to themselves and others.
Set Small Goals and Achieve Them
Setting small goals is a great way to boost kids’ self confidence, particularly if they are working up to something larger. Setting smaller goals allows kids to feel a sense of accomplishment along their journey of completing a larger goal, no matter the end outcome.
Try New Things (Even if You’re Nervous)
Encouraging kids to step outside their comfort zone can be a daunting thought for parents, however just like modelling positive self talk, stepping out of comfort zones is one of the most effective ways for kids to learn to grow their confidence.
Join A Team Or Group
Being part of a group or team is a great way to boost confidence in kids. A way for them to make friends and develop valuable social skills, community groups promote teamwork, responsibility and provide a sense of belonging.
Praise Ability Over Physicality
Praising ability over physicality teaches kids to not place importance on their appearance but rather what they can do through skills whether that be intellectual, emotional or intelligence.
