Bikini, Brazilian or Hollywood? What to Know Before Your Next Wax

When it comes to hair removal, there’s no one-size-fits-all. Across the globe, expectations for personal grooming vary a great deal:
beauty standards in Australia often differ from those in Brazil, South Africa or France. But no matter where you’re located, whether you’re prepping for summer, want a clean slate, or are simply curious about your options, waxing remains a popular choice for people around the world aspiring to achieve smooth, long-lasting results.

The reality is, however, when it comes to waxing techniques, we’re somewhat spoilt for choice. With terms like bikini, Brazilian and Hollywood being thrown around, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about what each style of hair removal means, or what to expect during your first appointment.

This article breaks down the different waxing styles, what they involve, and how to prepare, so you can make a decision that feels right for you without any pressure or judgment.

Different waxing styles

Let’s start with the basics: the main difference between waxing styles is simply how much hair is removed, and where.

Here’s a quick overview of the most common types:

Bikini wax

A bikini wax is exactly what the name suggests, as it focuses on tidying up the bikini line to remove hair that would typically be visible around a standard pair of underwear or swimwear. It’s a great starting point if you’re new to waxing or just want a neat, natural look without going too far.

Brazilian wax

A Brazilian wax goes further than the bikini, removing most or all of the hair from the front and between the legs. You can choose to leave a strip or triangle, or go completely bare. This style is popular for those who prefer a cleaner, more defined result.

Hollywood wax

The Hollywood wax takes things one step further, removing all hair from the front, between the legs, and around the back. It leaves nothing behind, offering a completely smooth finish. Despite sounding bold, it’s a common choice among clients who love the fresh, all-over clean feeling.

If you're curious to try a Hollywood wax, make sure you're seeing a trained and experienced professional who can help you feel comfortable and in control when dealing with your most intimate areas.

Preparing for your wax

Whether it’s your first wax or you’re switching styles, there are a few things worth knowing before your appointment.

It can be a bit painful, but it’s manageable

Let’s be real, waxing does involve some discomfort, especially the first time. But most people find it bearable, and the sensation typically lessens with regular appointments. If you’re concerned about pain, a bikini wax is a good starting point. You can also take a mild pain reliever 30 minutes beforehand, or ask your salon if they use numbing creams or soothing products.

Preparation is key

For the best results, your hair should be about the length of a grain of rice (around 6mm), long enough for the wax to grip, but not so long that it tugs more than necessary. Avoid shaving between appointments. Exfoliate gently the day before to remove dead skin cells, and skip heavy moisturisers on the day as they can affect how well the wax adheres.

Wear loose, comfy clothing

After your wax, the skin may feel a bit sensitive, so wearing soft, breathable fabrics will help. Steer clear of tight jeans or anything that rubs against freshly waxed areas.

Taking care of your skin after waxing

Post-wax care is just as important as the treatment itself. Here are a few ways to help your skin heal smoothly and avoid irritation:

  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and sweaty workouts for at least 24 hours.
  • Skip fragranced products like lotions or sprays on the waxed area.
  • Wear loose underwear to reduce friction and allow the skin to breathe.
  • Exfoliate gently a few days later to help prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Apply a soothing balm or aloe vera gel if you feel any tenderness or redness.

Remember that everyone’s skin reacts differently. If you experience prolonged irritation, don’t hesitate to reach out to your waxing professional for advice.

Your body, your choice

At the end of the day, waxing, like any form of personal grooming, is all about what makes you feel good. Whether you choose a tidy bikini wax, a bold Brazilian, or a completely clean Hollywood wax, the most important thing is that it’s your decision. There’s no right or wrong, just what feels comfortable and empowering for you.

If you’re ever unsure, chat with your beautician beforehand. A good waxing therapist will walk you through your options, explain the process, and make sure you feel informed and at ease.

Choosing the right waxing style isn’t about following trends, but rather, it’s about finding what fits your lifestyle, your preferences, and your body, whether you’re dipping your toes in for the first time or ready to go full Hollywood. Now you know what to expect and how to prep like a pro.
