An Interview with Lisa Woodbrook
- Written by The Women's Magazine

Lisa Woodbrook is bringing her hit show, MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s to Fringe in both Adelaide and Perth. This time around Lisa and her back-up dancers have remixed their hit show to feature more high energy dance numbers and even bigger pop anthems that will guarantee to have you up on your feet, dancing and singing the night away.
1. Who is Lisa Woodbrook?
Lisa Woodbrook is a Perth-based singer, songwriter and producer who is known for starring in major musicals like We Will Rock You, The Boy From Oz and 50 Shades! The Musical Parody, to writing her own original songs including the WAM nominated hit So Bad, and to producing and starring in her own original productions including It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You, Feeling Way Too Good and MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s.
2. MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s was one of the biggest breakout shows at this year's Fringe season - what do you think it was about the show that resonated with audiences?
It’s such a high energy show and features all of this amazing music that you know and love - so it’s really hard to not get caught up in the fun and sing and dance along. There’s a lot of nostalgia tied to the 90s and 00s, and for the audience, I think a lot of them were reminiscing on where they were in their lives when they were singing and dancing to these songs regularly. For some it took them back to their primary school and high school days and for others it probably brought them back to their clubbing nights.
3. You've remixed the show this time around - can you tell us about some of the changes and new additions without giving too much away?
For sure! We have selected an iconic 90s Diva to feature this year, with a new tune for the amazing acrobatic dancers to work their magic to. Also we have new jokes, and also giving the opportunity for a big ole HOWDY for some brave audience members.
4. Prior to MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s you did several one-woman shows - what's it been like collaborating with Ash and Jesse?
It's been a dream! Ashleigh and Jesse are brilliant performers with so much creativity and such a strong work ethic. It's been great collaborating with them on ideas during the creative process - I'm used to just collaborating with me, myself and I, but with more heads working together it feels like we can unlock a lot more creativity. Plus, sharing the stage with Ash and Jesse is amazing!
5. Tell me about your creative process of MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s - how did you come up with the show and how did you decide which songs made the cut and didn't?
I had spent a lot of time performing my shows around the world to older demographics and I felt ready to reconnect with my own millennial audience again. I had this vision of a high energy show, banger after banger after banger with dancers and big hit songs. I wrote this show on a plane back from Japan. Hopefully one day we'll perform MILLENNIAL in Tokyo! It was tricky picking the songs as I had a long long list of music to include (and it still grows today) but that's why I wanted a huge mash up at the end to tie every banger together!
6. Who is your Millennial icon?
Celine Dion. Also, the VHS Tape - enduring and reliable.
7. According to you, what are the three greatest things that came out of the 90s and 00s?
Britney Spears, MSN Messenger and The Lizzie McGuire Movie.
8. What are your top 3 millennial anthems and why?
Toxic by Britney Spears, Everybody by Backstreet Boys and STOP by The Spice Girls!
9. Your career has taken you around the world from cruise ships across the seas, to performing in musicals across Australia and even at Edinburgh Fringe - what makes performing back home in Perth so special?
Crowds in Perth are always so warm and up for a fun time! We had such a brilliant response debuting this show in our hometown, so coming back for Round 2 is super exciting! It's also really special to have people you know in the audience. As performers we feel a real sense of sharing and growth performing in our hometowns, as we are bringing back what we learnt travelling and performing to where it all started.
10. This year you're also heading back to Adelaide Fringe - it's been a few years between visits. What are you most looking forward to over there?
Yes! I cannot wait for Adelaide Fringe! It is such an amazing festival! We are in Gluttony, a fabulous hub of amazing shows. I think being a part of a bigger festival and performing for an interstate crowd is the most exciting. Plus, meeting artists from across the globe is really inspiring.
11. What's in store after Fringe?
We are set for some regional touring with MILLENNIAL and of course heaps more gigs for me around Perth/Australia and beyond! I'm really excited to see where this fun show goes - so watch this space!
12. Is there anything else you'd like to add?
MILLENNIAL is the show you CANNOT miss this Fringe! See you there!
