An expert’s guide to a protein-packed breakfast

  • Written by Dr Gina Levy

Breakfast is an important time of day to eat protein in order to maximise its benefits throughout the day. But new research from Kellanova has revealed 1-in 3 Aussies are not prioritising protein in their first meal of the day. With a PhD in dietetics, nutrition expert, Dr Gina Levy, Senior Nutrition Manager, Kellanova ANZ explains the importance of a protein-packed breakfast and easy ways Aussies can ensure they are getting their protein fix early in the day.

“Breakfast is the first opportunity in the day to get the nutrients you need. Because of protein’s importance for metabolism and appetite control, we should all be prioritising this nutrient in the morning. But our new research has shown many people are not doing that, instead focusing on more protein at lunch and dinner”.

“By opting for foods that have protein at breakfast, Aussies are able to get the benefits of protein early in the day. These benefits then flow on to the rest of the day, particularly when it comes to reducing cravings and controlling appetite. Protein is also important for building lean muscle, for strong bones and healthy skin and nails. Because of this, spreading protein intake out across the day is recommended”.

For Gina, the secret to a protein-packed breakfast is keeping it simple.

“Our research has shown that Aussies want to include more protein within their diet but nearly 1-in-3 find it time-consuming to prepare a protein-rich breakfast. For busy Aussies, convenience is key – nearly 50% of Aussies agreed this was an important factor when selecting protein foods”.

To help solve this, Kellanova has launched Kellogg’s® Nutri-Grain® High Protein Crunch. The new cereal is set to make the search for convenient breakfast foods that are high in protein easier.

Gina explains “Kellogg’s® Nutri-Grain® High Protein Crunch has been designed to deliver a quarter of your daily protein needs before even leaving the house in the morning. Plus, with milk, it really packs a protein punch”.

Kellogg’s® Nutri-Grain® High Protein Crunch contains 12.7g of protein in a single bowl and provides 25% of the recommended daily protein intake. It is available nationwide in Woolworths and Coles and will be in select independents from early October, with a RRP of $10 for a 500g pack.
