Coastrek and Beyond Blue event on the Sunshine Coast

  • Written by The Women's Magazine

Coastrek and Beyond Blue are teaming up to hike for mental health along the Sunshine Coast’s spectacular coastline on Friday, 18 July 2025 for the annual Coastrek Sunshine Coast hiking challenge.

Trekkers will hike either 50km from Noosa, 30km from Peregian Beach, or 20km from Marcoola, all finishing in Mooloolaba - enjoying the physical and mental health benefits of nature, connection and movement while raising funds for the Beyond Blue 24/7 Support Service.

Coastrek is known for utilising Australia’s world-class coastal trails, and the Sunshine Coast event offers trekkers the ultimate beachside adventure. The route features more than 10 stunning beaches - including Noosa, Sunshine, Coolum, and Maroochydore—and scenic highlights such as Point Arkwright, Alexandra Headland, and the Maroochy River.

“This event really puts the ‘coast’ in Coastrek,” says Coastrek Founder, Di Westaway OAM. “With golden stretches of sand, breathtaking ocean views, and lush natural landscapes, our Sunshine Coast route ditches the concrete jungle for a true nature immersion. It’s beautiful, challenging and incredibly rewarding.”

“Both Coastrek and Beyond Blue recognise the vital role that exercise, nature and social connection play in supporting mental health,” said Westaway. “Taking on a challenge like Coastrek helps people form positive connections with fitness and wellbeing that extend far beyond event day.”

Currently, around 5 million Australians are living with anxiety or depression. Every day, over 750 people reach out to the Beyond Blue Support Service, resulting in more than 275,000 life-changing conversations each year.

A recent Beyond Blue survey of 5,000 Australians found that 77% use exercise and 72% use time in nature to support their emotional wellbeing - making events like Coastrek more relevant than ever.

“Everyone who takes part in Coastrek is not only doing something powerful for their own mental health—they’re helping ensure Beyond Blue’s Support Service remains free and accessible to every Australian, whenever and wherever they need it,” said Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman, who will be hiking alongside thousands of trekkers in this year’s event.

Coastrek is a team-based event, with a minimum of two people per team and fully supported with a 12-week training program. It fosters strong connections—between friends, colleagues, nature and the broader community.
