Enhancing home security: practical tips for a safer home

  • Written by The Women's Magazine

Home security is a high priority for many Aussies – in fact, according to a survey of Australians, Canadians, and Americans by Compare the Market, Australians were the most likely (67.4 percent) to be worried about their home being broken into. As such, it's no surprise that Aussies are investing in home security measures. Implementing effective home security not only protects your property but also provides peace of mind for the safety of your loved ones. In this article, we'll explore practical tips to enhance home security and create a safer living environment.

Install a robust home security system

For added security, invest in a comprehensive home security system. This could include a number of different features, including surveillance cameras, motion detectors, and door or window sensors. Modern systems often offer remote monitoring through mobile apps, allowing you to keep an eye on your property from anywhere.

Strong exterior doors and windows

Reinforce exterior doors with solid core or metal construction and install high-quality. Secure windows with sturdy locks or even consider adding security film to make them more resistant to break-ins. Additionally, make sure to keep your doors and windows locked when you're not at home or while you're sleeping.

Lock it up

Invest in high-quality locks for windows and doors. According to a 2021 Statista survey, 88.9 percent of Aussies asked said they locked their doors and windows to protect their home against theft. Deadbolts, smart locks, and security bars are also effective options for added protection. Additionally, make sure to change your locks whenever you move into a new home or if your keys are lost or stolen.

Motion sensor lighting

Install motion sensor lights around the exterior of your home. These lights will automatically turn on when they detect movement, and act as a simple yet effective deterrent. Lights also eliminate dark areas around your home, where potential intruders could hide or enter your home unnoticed. Consider installing motion-activated lights around your property perimeter, including areas like the garage, backyard, and front steps.

Landscape for security

Keep shrubs and trees trimmed to eliminate hiding spots near windows and doors. A well-maintained landscape not only enhances your home's curb appeal but also reduces potential hiding places for burglars. Keep bushes and trees below window level, and avoid planting tall shrubs near entry points. Additionally, consider using thorny plants as a natural barrier around your property perimeter.

Secure sliding doors

Sliding glass doors can be vulnerable entry points. Reinforce them by installing a security bar or rod in the track, making it harder for someone to force the door open. Another option is to install a door sensor that will trigger an alarm if the door is opened without your knowledge. There are also deadbolt locks that are made specifically for sliding doors.

Be mindful of social media

Avoid sharing travel plans or your absence from home on social media. This includes posting about the dates of upcoming travel plans. Broadcasting your absence can make your home an easy target for burglars. Instead, consider waiting until you return home to share photos and post about your trip.

Get to know your neighbours

It's well established that "everybody needs good neighbours". Forming a good relationship with your neighbours can be helpful in preventing break-ins. They can keep an eye on your home while you're away and report any suspicious activity. In return, be a good neighbour yourself by looking out for them and keeping watch of their homes. Joining community groups is another good way to stay informed about security concerns in an area.

Secure valuables

Keep valuable items, such as jewellery, important documents, and electronics, in a secure home safe. In the event of a break-in, having these items well-protected can minimise losses and added inconvenience. Ensure the safe is anchored to the floor or wall, making it more difficult for a burglar to remove. Another option is to store valuable items in a safety deposit box at the bank.

Home automation for simulated presence

Leaving your place for a while? Use smart home technology to create the illusion of an occupied home. Timers for lights, TVs, and radios can give the appearance that someone is home, deterring potential intruders. Smart locks can also be used remotely to lock and unlock doors, giving the impression that someone is coming and going.

Regular maintenance

Keep your home in good repair. Fix any broken windows, doors, or locks promptly. Regular maintenance not only improves the overall safety of your home but also prevents potential weak points that burglars might exploit. A home that looks well cared-for can be less likely to be targeted, as it gives the impression that someone is home and vigilant about their property.

Having a home that feels safe is important. Implementing these home security tips can significantly enhance the safety of your residence. By combining technological advancements with common-sense practices, you can create a secure home environment for you and your family. Remember that home security is an ongoing process, and staying vigilant is key to maintaining a safe and comfortable living space.
