Six tips to battle oily skin

  • Written by Aida Rejzovic

Battling with oily skin? Do you dream of having a clearer, more balanced skin? Try our top six tips.

1. Use a gentle face cleanser

Start using a gentle cleanser. Avoid products that contain alcohol, which can exacerbate oily skin and cause dehydration. You should also look for an oil cleanser, which will remove dirt and makeup without stripping away your skin's natural oils. Make sure you choose one that is fragrance free and hypoallergenic to avoid irritation.

2. Use natural products

Natural products are a must, as many supermarket skin care products contain harsh chemicals which can exacerbate skin production and may even cause breakouts. Natural products contain gentle and nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile and jojoba oil which work to calm your skin and bring it into a balance. Tea tree oil is another phenomenal natural ingredient that does wonders for oily skin. It has antimicrobial & anti fungal properties, providing your skin with anti bacterial support.

3. Exfoliate regularly

Exfoliating regularly is one of the most important things you can do for your skin. It helps keep your pores clear and your skin looking healthy. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, which can clog up pores and make your face feel dull and flaky. You'll probably want to use an exfoliator twice a week or so (or whenever your skin starts to really oily).

4. Use an oil free moisturiser

You should use an oil free moisturiser if you have oily skin. Using a moisturiser with oil can make your skin even more oily, cause breakouts and make you sensitive to the sun. This is because oily skin has more sebaceous glands so it naturally produces oil. Moisturiser is important for your skin, even if you have oily skin. It will keep your skin hydrated and protect it from the sun. If you put moisturiser with SPF on before going out in the sun this will prevent your skin from drying out and getting damaged.

5. Eat a healthy diet

If you have oily skin, it's not just about the products you use on your face. It's important to take care of the skin from within. A good way to do this is by eating a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, which will help keep your complexion clear and balanced.

6. Avoid using too many products

Using too many products at once is one of the worst mistakes you can make when trying to treat oily skin. While it's tempting to try every new product that comes along, doing so will only exacerbate your problem by clogging your pores and causing more oil production. Instead of using several different types of moisturiser or toner, opt for a cleanser specifically formulated for oily skin. You can also use a clarifying lotion if necessary, but most people with this type of skin don't need it unless the face feels extra greasy after applying other products.
